Default Re: [ Increase Your Computer's Performance ]

Although this topic doesn't seem to be SFO related, I am quite positive that it can become beneficial to the users of the SFO community, and perhaps, it may allow users to run the SFO program more smoothly if they are encountering any problems with running the software.

Clean up disk errors
-Run once a week

Whenever a program crashes (SFO for example), or you experience some power outage, your computer may create errors on your computer's hard disk. Over time, the errors can slow down your computer. Luckily, the Windows operating system includes a Disk Check program to check and clean any errors on your computer and keep it running smoothly. This thread primarily focuses on the Windows operating systems, but I will also include information for users on a different OS.

To run Disk Check:

1. In your Start menu, click My Computer.

2. In the My Computer dialog box, right-click on the drive you wish to check for errors (for most of us this will be the C: drive, unless you have multiple drives on your computer), and click Properties.

3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab. In the Error-Checking section, press the Check Now… button. A Check Disk dialog box displays, as shown below.

In the Check Disk dialog box, check all the check boxes. Click Start.

5. You will see a message box that says you can schedule the disk check to start the next time you restart your computer. Click Yes. The next time you restart your computer, it will automatically run through a disk check before displaying your login screen. After the disk check finishes, Windows will automatically bring you to your login screen.

Do note that Check Disk can take more than an hour to check and clean errors on your computer.

Remove temporary files
-Run once a week

Your computer can pick up and store temporary files when you're looking at Web pages and even when you're working on files in programs, such as Microsoft Word. Over time, these files will slow your computer's performance. You can use the Windows Disk Cleanup screen to rid your computer of these deadbeat, useless files.

Free up disk space

By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.

Use Disk Cleanup to:

• Remove temporary Internet files.

• Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

• Empty the Recycle Bin.

• Remove Windows temporary files.

• Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.

• Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

To run Disk Cleanup:
1. In your Start menu, click My Computer.

2. In the My Computer dialog box, right-click on the drive you wish to check for errors (usually this will be the C: drive, unless you have multiple drives on your computer), and click Properties.

3. In the Properties dialog box, click Disk Cleanup.

4. Disk Cleanup will calculate how much space you can free up on your hard drive. After its scan, the Disk Cleanup dialog box reports a list of files you can remove from your computer, as pictured below. This scan can take a while depending on how many files you have lying around on your computer.

5. After the scan is complete, in the Disk Cleanup dialog box, click View Files to see what Disk Cleanup will throw out once you give it the go ahead. You can check and uncheck boxes to define what you wish to keep or discard. When you're ready, click OK.

6. You can also select the More Options tab within the Disk Cleanup screen to look for software programs you don't use much anymore. You then have the choice to remove these unused programs.

Rearrange your data
-Run once a month

Your computer often breaks files side by side to increase the speed of access and retrieval. However, as files are updated, your computer saves these updates on the largest space available on the hard drive, often found far away from the other adjacent sectors of the file.

The result: a fragmented file. Fragmented files cause slower performance. This is because your computer must now search for all of the file's parts. In other words, your computer knows where all the pieces are, but putting them back together, and in the correct order when you need them, can slow your computer down.

Windows includes a Disk Defragmenter program to piece all your files back together again and make them quicker to open.

To run the Disk Defragmenter:

1. In your Start menu, click My Computer.

2. In the My Computer dialog box, right-click on the drive you wish to check for errors (for most of us this will be the C: drive, unless you have multiple drives on your computer), and click Properties.

3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab, and then in the Defragmentation section, click Defragment Now….

4. In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, select the Volume (most likely your Local Disk C: at the top of the screen, and then click Analyze.

5. After analyzing your computer, the Disk Defragmenter displays a message stating whether you should defragment your computer. Press Defragment to clean up your computer if necessary. The Disk Defragmenter will reorganize files by placing together and organizing them by program and size, as shown in Figure 5.

Once it is complete, you may close it.

-Keep in mind that this software can be used on the Windows Operating System as well.

This program has a simple user interface, much like the Defragmenter that comes with Windows XP. There are many options, such as a boot load defrag, primary and secondary defrag.

Other useful programs for download can be found in mastergrim8's [Useful Programs and Tips] thread.

Defrag takes the most time.

It could take 2-3 hrs depending on how fragmented your drive is....

Can't believe the crap that hapenned here at the time...
Cleaned the place and i'll say a simple thing...

this is basic computer knowledge the kind that we learn in basic computer class.
there is no copyright infrigment, there is no, i posted it first... it doesn'T matter. as any people who took computer class learned this at the very beginning.

now moving on... i'm adding to this thread by adding a very crucial and a bit more advanced...
tutorial on how to clean start your windows which should help with spywares and unwanted softwares.

first you will need to have access to the RUN command in the start menu.
if its not there, do this...
right click on your task bar.
select properties
click on start menu tab
click on customize button aside your actually checked box.
then check the Run command
click ok and then ok.

Clean Start your computer
*** *** BEWARE *** ***
these steps could potentially screw your computer if you dont follow them correctly.
i repeat if the steps here aren't followed correctly, you can end up with windows not starting.

step 1 - click start menu
step 2 - click Run
step 3 - type in MSConfig
step 4 - press enter
step 5 - Click the service tab at the top.
***** BEWARE THE NEXT STEP IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT *****
step 6 - check below the list and check the box called "hide all microsoft services" <--- VERY IMPORTANT
step 7 - click the deselect all button
step 8 - select back your anti-virus (you do not want to leave it disabled)
step 9 - click the start tab at the top, aside service tab.
step 10 - click the Deselect All button.
step 11 - check back your anti-virus software (again you dont want to leave it disabled)
step 12 - click apply
step 13 - click ok
step 14 - reboot your computer

now your computer should start without any other programs or services running.
this should ensure your computer is correct. if at this point the computer reboots in windows.
then gives you errors, it means you have spywares bugging your computer. you should check for spywares. if everything starts fine, then you should see a clear difference in speed and functionnality.

beware some wireless needs certain programs to work right, mainly rogers internet usb keys.
you have to recheck everything related to rogers.

i hope this would help a lot of people. these third party programs that we just disabled are also often the cause for GV priority bug. doing this often solves all GV problems. hope this was helpfull to any of you and dont forget to clean your computer once in a while. and make sure not to instal bull**** like toolbars without your consent.

have a nice day.
